Salomon Sprint Adventure Race #4 Race Report
To an Organiser, a venue is a precious commodity. In Adventure Races we have been blessed to establish a broad support base and many of our regulars have been competing in our events for a few years now. We always feel compelled to bring you fresh areas and course lay-outs and we believe that it plays a big role in the success of our events. This year we approached Hennops Pride 4X4 due to the fantastic response we’ve had to Hennops 4X4 and Quad trails further up the road. The area was exciting but presented us with limited cycling opportunities. The detailed path network that was available was simply too technical to take our entry level racers across. So we settled on a two lap cycle format. The cycle was relatively short, but quite technical so we decided to increase the trail running distance, using the path network that was too technical to cycle on. Everyone started the morning with a brisk 3km trial run over the nearest koppie and back to the start. The first teams came in under 15min and jumped onto their bicycles for the first of the two laps. The MTB leg took the teams over the river on a steel bridge and through the caravan park and across the first section of the 4X4 course and back over the steel bridge. Then the route took teams for a 5km stretch over the saddle, up the valley and back along the ridge on a very technical rocky quad trail. The teams flew into the transition and set off for their second run on the 4x4 trails to the cargo net. The second run went over a hang bridge through the caravan park and all the way across the property along rolling hills and technical 4X4 trails. When teams left the trail they followed the bunting down to the cargo net. From above it was extremely daunting and most people felt a jolt of adrenaline. They also felt a jolt of surprise when they realised that the cargo net was actually quite easy to scramble down. With adrenaline pumping team bolted down the hill and along the river back to the transition for the second cycle. The last cycle was a repeat of the first but teams did it a bit quicker now knowing the technical aspects of the cycles and knowing where they could push and when to hold back a bit. Team Numa Optics stormed home in an unbelievable time. Alex Pope and Jeremy Green believe that the amount of running (7km) gave them the edge as they are both top orienteers and do a lot of running training. We did unfortunately have a lot of teams pulling out before the three hour mark and we feel that perhaps the repeat of the first cycle leg left some of the slower racers a little uninspired and caused them to rather pull out in transition. If we use this format again we will try to have two different cycle legs. Many teams were very happy about the many transitions and the spectators thoroughly enjoyed the buzz of activity at the transition. We must, as always, thank our generous Sponsors; Salomon, First Ascent, Food State and Epic Sports. A massive thank you to our marshals who were hard pressed and performed admirably. Finally, a big thank you to the racers who appeared despite the lure of Sunday morning at home and several other races in the vicinity. We always appreciate the support.
