Echinacea is a genus of nine species of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, all native to North America. Popularly known as the purple coneflower, it has been traditionally applied as a herbal remedy by the North American Plains Indians, who used its roots to make a poultice for a number of wounds resulting from insects and snakes and also for treating sore gums and colds.
