The Effects Of Toxins On The Body - by Dr Trevor Baillie

Exposure to toxins is a major source of disease and the problem is increasing all the time as thousands of new chemicals are released into the environment and put in our food every year.
To help our bodies cope support the liver’s detoxification pathways with selective supplements.

A study in the British Medical Journal estimated that 75 percent of most cancers are caused by environmental and lifestyle factors, including exposure to chemicals. Another report by the Columbia University School of Public Health estimated that 95 percent of cancer is caused by diet and environmental toxicity. Studies show most individuals have somewhere between 400 and 800 chemicals stored in their bodies, typically in fat cells. Our environment is not very different from theirs and toxins are everywhere, in our water, air and in our food. We don't realize that we're being affected until we get a chronic disease after years of subtle and often consistent exposure to a combination of these toxins.

Tips to Avoid Toxins
Buy and eat (as much as possible) organic produce and free-range, organic foods. If you can only purchase one or two organic products it probably should be free range organic eggs and organic milk.
Rather than eating fish, which is largely contaminated with PCBs, dioxins and mercury, consume a high-quality purified fish or cod liver oil.
Avoid processed foods – they are processed with chemicals.
Only use natural cleaning products in your home. Most health food stores have these available or find them on-line.
Switch to natural brands of toiletries, including shampoo, toothpaste, antiperspirants and cosmetics.
Have metal fillings removed as they're a major source of mercury. Be sure to have this done by a specialised dentist. Most dentists are technically qualified to replace your amalgam fillings but only a few dentists know how to do it safely minimising your risk of mercury exposure during the process.

Avoid artificial air fresheners, tumble-dryer sheets, fabric softeners or other synthetic fragrances.
Avoid artificial food additives of all kinds, including artificial sweeteners and MSG.
Get plenty of safe sun exposure to boost your vitamin D levels and your immune system.
Drink bottled spring water or filtered water. Reverse osmosis filtered water is best.


The 10 Most Common Toxins

Toxin
PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls): This industrial chemical has been banned for decades, yet is a persistent organic pollutant that's still present in our environment.
Risks
Cancer, impaired foetal brain development
Major Sources
Farm-raised salmon. Most farm-raised salmon are fed meals of ground-up fish that have absorbed PCBs from the environment.

Toxin
Pesticides: According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 60 percent of herbicides, 90 percent of fungicides and 30 percent of insecticides are known to be carcinogenic. In the U.S. pesticide residues have been detected in 50 percent to 95 percent of foods.
Risks
Cancer, Parkinson's disease, miscarriage, nerve damage, birth defects, blocking the absorption of food nutrients.
Major Sources
Food (fruits, vegetables and commercially raised meats), insect sprays

Toxin
Mould and other Fungal Toxins: One in three people have had an allergic reaction to mould. Mycotoxins (fungal toxins) can cause a range of health problems with exposure to only a bit.
Risks
Cancer, heart disease, asthma, multiple sclerosis, diabetes.
Major Sources
Contaminated buildings, foods like peanuts, wheat, corn and alcoholic beverages

Toxin
Phthalates: These chemicals are used to lengthen the life of fragrances and soften plastics.
Risks
Endocrine system damage (phthalates chemically mimic hormones and are particularly dangerous to children).
Major Sources
Plastic wrap, plastic bottles, plastic food storage containers. All of these can leach phthalates into our food.

Toxin
VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds): VOCs are a major contributing factor to ozone, an air pollutant. VOCs tend to be even higher (two to five times) in indoor air than outdoor air, likely because they are present in so many household products.
Risks
Cancer, eye and respiratory tract irritation, headaches, dizziness, visual disorders, and memory impairment
Major Sources
Drinking water, carpet, paints, deodorants, cleaning fluids, varnishes, cosmetics, dry cleaned clothing, moth repellents, air fresheners.

Toxin
Dioxins: Chemical compounds formed as a result of combustion processes such as commercial or municipal waste incineration and from burning fuels (like wood, coal or oil).
Risks
Cancer, reproductive and developmental disorders, endometriosis, chloracne, skin rashes, skin discoloration, excessive body hair, mild liver damage
Major sources
Animal fats: Over 95 percent of exposure comes from eating commercial animal fats.

Toxin
Asbestos: This insulating material was widely used from the 1950s to 1970s. Problems arise when the material becomes old and crumbly, releasing fibres into the air.
Risks
Cancer, scarring of the lung tissue, mesothelioma (a rare form of cancer)
Major sources
Insulation on floors, ceilings, water pipes and healing ducts from the 1950s to 1970s.

Toxin
Heavy Metals: Metals like arsenic, mercury, lead, aluminium and cadmium, which are prevalent in many areas of our environment, can accumulate in soft tissues of the body.
Risks
Cancer, neurological disorders, Alzheimer's disease, foggy head, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, decreased production of red and white blood cells, abnormal heart rhythm, damage to blood vessels
Major sources
Drinking water, fish, vaccines, pesticides, preserved wood, antiperspirant, building materials, dental amalgams, chlorine plants.

Toxin
Chloroform: This colourless liquid has a pleasant, non-irritating odour and a slightly sweet taste, and is used to make other chemicals. It's also formed when chlorine is added to water.
Risks
Cancer, potential reproductive damage, birth defects, dizziness, fatigue, headache, liver and kidney damage.
Major sources
Air, drinking water and food can contain chloroform.

Toxin
Chlorine: This highly toxic, yellow-green gas is one of the most heavily used chemical agents.
Risks
Sore throat, coughing, eye and skin irritation, rapid breathing, narrowing of the bronchi, wheezing, blue colouring of the skin, accumulation of fluid in the lungs, pain in the lung region, severe eye and skin burns, lung collapse, reactive airways dysfunction syndrome
Major Sources
Household cleaners, drinking water (in small amounts), air when living near an industry (such as a paper plant) that uses chlorine in industrial processes.

1 Week Detox diet plan

Day1 - Fruit and vegetable juices

Drink fruit and vegetable juices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In order to preserve all vitamins, make the juice just before drinking. First day of the 7 day detox diet plan you can drink all fresh and mixed juices you like; here are some useful ideas:

1 grapefruit, 1 orange and 2 tbsp* of lemon juice
7 tbsp (100 ml) beet and celery juice + 1 tbsp apple vinegar
20 tbsp (300 ml) cucumber juice, 7 tbsp (100 ml) tomato juice and 1 tbsp chopped up parsley
14 tbsp (200 ml) carrot juice and 7 tbsp (100 ml) apple juice
Drink about 3.2 pints (1.5 liters) of juices. You can drink mineral water and tea as much as you like, but with no sugar.

* Tbsp=tablespoon (1 tbsp ~ 15 ml)

Take one Holistix detox sachet in the morning with first juice. Take a second Holistix detox sachet with lunch-time juice.

 Day 2 - Potatoes

 Breakfast

1 slice of rye-bread and 100 g of low-fat cheese with one Holistix detox sachet
Boil 750 g of potatoes and divide them into 2-3 portions.
Here are a few ideas for cooking the potatoes:
Potato salad with onion or leeks, with lemon juice dressing
Mashed potatoes mixed with 4 tbsp hot milk and chopped up dill or parsley
Potato soup garnished with green spices and nutmeg, and 1 boiled egg 

Take one Detox sachet with your lunch serving.
Day 3 - Rice

 Breakfast

1 slice of rye-bread and 100 g of low-fat cheese with one Holistix detox sachet
Boil 200 g rice for about 25-30 minutes in non-salted water. Strain off the rice and divide it into 5 portions. Eat 1 portion every 2 hours. If you wish you can stir up the rice with some fruit or tomato juice or fat free vegetable soup.
Take one Holistix detox sachet with your lunch serving.
Drink at least 2.5 liters of mineral water.

Day 4 - Fruits

Breakfast

1 slice of rye-bread with 100 g of low-fat cheese, 1 apple or pear with one Holistix detox sachet.
For the rest of the day eat only fruits about 1 - 1.5 kg. You can make a fruit salad and garnish it with lemon juice. You can eat all kinds of fruits except for bananas.
Drink at least 2 liters of mineral water.
   
Day 5 - Macaroni

 Breakfast
1 slice of bread, 1 tsp* of butter, 1 boiled egg with one Holistix detox sachet.
Boil 150 g macaroni for about 10 minutes in salted water. Strain off the macaroni and divide them into 3-4 portions. For the rest of the day eat only the macaroni.
Here are some ideas how to vary the macaroni portions:
Mix the macaroni with 2 tbsp of parsley or dill and 30 g grated cheese
Mix the macaroni with 500ml ready-cooked vegetable soup and 1 tsp chopped onion
Mix the macaroni with 1 chopped up tomato, 2 tbsp boiled peas, 1 tbsp apple vinegar and 1 tsp of parsley
You can drink 2 liters of mineral water.

* Tsp=teaspoon (1 tsp ~ 5 ml)

Day 6 - Vegetables

 Breakfast

1 slice of bread with 1 tsp of butter, 1 boiled egg with one Holistix detox sachet.
For the rest of the day eat about 1 kg of vegetables - half fresh and the other half stewed.
Here are some ideas how to cook the vegetables:
Stew 250g cauliflower and 250 g cabbage
Prepare all kinds of mixed salads with the fresh vegetables with lemon dressing or apple vinegar. Eat 1 boiled egg or 50 g cheese with one of the portions

You can drink 2 - 2.5 liters of mineral water.

Day 7 - Meat

 Breakfast

1 slice of bread, 1 tsp of butter, 30 g cheese, 1 tomato, a few slices of onion with one Holistix detox sachet.
Lunch
100 g roasted veal,
120 g boiled potatoes mixed with 1 tbsp vegetable oil
And 2 tbsp of parsley.
Dinner
